Roses Garden

Roses Garden

The rose garden, located to the west of the western barchessa, features a checkerboard layout composed of alternating grass squares and cobblestone paved ones.

In the 1930s, the putti that once decorated the low walls of the semicircle in front of the main building and along the villa’s main entrance avenue were placed here.

For the small rose garden, Buzzi developed several variations, documented by a rich collection of drawings preserved in his archive at La Scarzuola. In his sketches, the designer reimagines various possibilities for the checkerboard layout, even proposing an original solution involving juxtaposed stone panels meant to create a sort of stone labyrinth inhabited by playful cherubs.

The alternation between grass and stone paving has been restored, resolving the issues caused by moss overgrowth. In keeping with the original project, the putti have been retained as part of the garden’s playful and decorative design, while the plantings have been restored in both their composition and lawn arrangement.

The rose cottage, overlooking the garden and completing the north side of this precious corner, is a 1930s structure.
